Searching for Roy G Biv II - Red, update 1

Welcome to the second round of Searching for Roy G Biv! 

Julie and I are starting all over in our quest for the elusive Mr Biv. Yes...for Mr Biv. Sometime last year when Julie originally mentioned Roy G Biv in a post, I had to do a quick internet search on him. I had absolutely no idea who the mysterious man was nor why he rated a mention on her blog. 

Fast forward to discovering his true identity and feeling rather foolish, but just a tad curious, I asked my husband if he knew the truth about Mr Biv. My query was met with...well...much laughter that the question even needed asking. Seems he and Julie learned the colors of the rainbow the same way while I had merely learned red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.  

Thus began our monthly search for the elusive Mr Biv. Basic guidelines for how to participate in the search can be found here.

My reds are mostly from my weekend trip to Washington, DC last month...a few photos that were held back to share later. Enjoy!

Searching for Roy G Biv - Red

 

When Julie and I discussed making our search for Roy into a series of monthly posts, one thing that we didn't talk about was whether or not to identify what we took photos of. I think most of mine are pretty obvious, but there are two that aren't. What do you think...should we identify the subject matter or simply concentrate on the color?

I'll update the post as the day goes to add links to blogs that are taking part in the hunt. If you see one that hasn't been listed, please let me know. As far as Julie and I concerned, the more the merrier. June's color quest for orange will be posted on the 21st (3rd Thursday).

Julie let this comment in answer to my question above about whether or not to identify what we took a photo of.

I did post info with my pics but mine are much more obvious...you have me stymied with some of yours...will you let us know tomorrow if we aren't able to guess? Are there fabulous prizes if we guess correctly?!?

Prizes, huh? Sounds like a fun challenge to me. If anyone can correctly guess what all 5 of my photos are of, I'll be happy to send a bit of rusty cotton their way. Just leave a comment with your guesses. You have until...oh...let's see...midnight my time tomorrow night [that's midnight eastern standard time Friday, in case you're wondering] to take a stab at identifying my reds.

Searching for Roy G Biv - green

My friend Julie of the Julie B Booth blog, wrote a post the other day entitled Searching for Roy G Biv which showed the most beautiful yellow hibiscus and included the words Yellow. 'Nuf said.

I looked from the hibiscus photo to the blog title to Julie's short text a couple of times, wondering all the while what the connection was. Was Roy G Biv a botanist? Was he an author as well? Or an artist, perhaps, of botanical illustrations. Just what did Roy G Biv have to do with a yellow hibiscus?

So...oh! the laughter really can be heard via cyberspace, you know...I did a quick Google search on Mr Biv.
[I know that sound! Someone just fell off their chair from laughing so hard!] And felt like a blooming idiot. [pun totally intended] Never had I heard the colors of the rainbow referred to as Roy G Biv. Or if I have, it was long ago forgotten.

The funny thing...admittedly not near as funny as my not knowing what Roy G Biv is...is that the day Julie posted yellow was the same day I had posted Red. A challenge was issued [from me to her] to see who could post orange, which Julie won with photos from SCAD, better known as Savannah College of Art and Design.

With red, orange and yellow covered, green is next and it's my turn. Here are a few offerings from around the house.

Marilyn Richeda, 80 Unusual Stories

I recently saw Marilyn Richeda's exhibit, Whispered Warnings at Silvermine Arts Center and totally fell in love with the simplicity and boldness of her installation of red ceramic houses. Seemed to be an excellent example of my mantras of keep it simple and focus.

Ready to dye

Never in a million years would I have thought that one day I'd be readying to use the Jacquard Acid and Procion MX dyes for their intended use - on fabric. Once upon a time not so long ago, yet for 20+ years, these were my basketry dyes. When all of my weaving supplies were packed away and hauled to the basement, the dyes went as well.

The last time I dyed anything was over 4 years ago before we moved to Connecticut. I spent a week dyeing reeds in the basement because we were moving during the winter and was uncertain when there would be another chance to do so. Wet, colorful reeds were strung on twine tied to the metal poles in the basement to dry.

The basement was crisscrossed with thick lines of purple, 

yellow, 

red 

and pink.
