In the studio

Yesterday, while working on finishing the top and bottom of several of my large rust pieces, I decided it was time to wash the rest of my rusty stash.

That big pile of stuff on the work table? That's the rest...most of which are roughly 10-12" wide by 72" long. The plan was to retrieve them from the dryer before they became too tangled and wrinkled,

but a neighbor dropped by and I forgot. These need to be ironed in the next couple weeks so they...or at least part of them...can be shipped to Pam's for our 3rd annual artist retreat.

It didn't seem wise to dry the organza in the dryer, so it was hung in the studio to air dry.

The cheese cloth was another matter. I considered air drying it as well, but decided to pitch it in the dryer along with the rest. Gotta admit, I kind of like what happened.

And temporarily hanging what will become rust boro #2 atop the larger piece [so the organza could be hung on the other board] has definite design potential.

    1. Writhing...they do seem to be, don't they? They're definitely beginning to shout they want separating and ironing.

    1. Boro has been a fascination for a bit now and somewhere along the way, it clicked that my rusty fabrics could become boro. Hopefully, I'll do it justice.

  3. All I can think is that I'm glad my paper rarely needs ironing...there's quite a stack there! Maybe Winter is rusting season and Spring is ironing season?!?! I must say tho that the ironed pieces look so peaceful and I just want to run my hands over them. Hanging there they are just so visually inspiring...
So good to know that the annual retreat is coming up!

    1. Spring does seem to be turning into my ironing season, doesn't it? All of the fabrics should have been soaked and washed as I went along, but it seems that leaving them for a bit helped the rust settle in. While there's been a bit of bleeding and fading of color, there's not been much. And the heat is doing wonderful things to bring out subtle coloring.

Yes, the 3rd annual artist retreat is fast approaching. I leave May 27, in fact and will be in our Oz [Kansas, that is] for a week of friendship and creative bliss at Pam's. Since we never end up doing exactly what we've planned to do, there's no telling what will transpire.

  4. The temporary hanging on your studio wall is great as is! has definite possibilities without much more alteration! Have fun with the cheese cloth. it would be easier to wet it again and hang to dry than to iron the wrinkled wad! or are you a glutton for ironing???

    1. A glutton for ironing? No! I actually hate ironing, but it is necessary right now. The wrinkled cheese cloth will stay wrinkled. It's just too delicious as is.

    1. Thank you eb! With nearly 100 pieces rusted since November, the bulk washing and drying in the dryer was the speedier way to go. And the ironing isn't so bad. I moved everything downstairs last night and ironed while watching tv. Nearly done now.

  6. Hmm..wish the pile of laundry I have to deal with today looked half as interesting.
I also like what's starting to go on with the new boro piece.

Can't wait to see what happens at Pam's!
