Searching for Roy G Biv 3 - Blogger's Choice - Update 2

Welcome to 2014's last installment in the search for Roy G Biv. This month's color is blogger's choice and I've chosen...what else?...rust. Enjoy!

It's a bit difficult to believe we've come to the end of a full year of posting the colors of the rainbow and beyond. In case you're wondering, Julie and I are continuing the search in 2015. January through July will follow the Roy G Biv alphabet. Afterwards, we're going off rainbow with the addition of brown, gold (think metallics...silver in 2016), grey, pink and ending the year with blogger's choice.

If you'd like to join in the fun, but don't know the rules...guidelines really...it's very simple. Just post 5 or so photos of items featuring that month's color to your blog. When it's live, let Julie or I know via a comment on our blogs and we'll list your blog and link to it. This truly is a case of the more, the merrier so we'd love to have all our blogging friends joining in. 2015's calendar is below.

Speaking of Julie, I'd like to congratulate her on the release of her book,

Fabric Printing at Home can be ordered from QBookshop or Amazon. I am thrilled for Julie and can't wait for my copy to arrive. Guess how I'll be spending the holidays! It's also an honor to have work included in the gallery section.

Happy searching!

Mary Ann over at Blue Sky Dreaming shares some of her most loved colors from the year.

Sharmon of Sharmon Davidson Contemporary Mixed Media begins her year end post with a rustic collection of greys.

Charlton Stitcher reviews the flavours of the year.

Maya of Million Little Stitches chose opulent and sparkly golds as her color of choice.

Eric of Cerulean has posted a few subtle, earthy-toned favorites.

Thank to all who have searched with us this year! It's been amazing to view your finds each month. Happy searching in 2015!!!

Roy G Biv 3 Reminder

Just a quick reminder that next Thursday, December 18,
is the last installment of Roy G Biv 3 for 2014.

The color? Your choice.

As usual, let Julie or me know that you've joined in the search and we'll link to your blog post.

Perspective

It all depends on how you look at it.

Is it better to see the whole?

Or the details?

Little by little, slightly shifting focus?

Should it be this way?

Or that?

Around the World Blog Hop

Welcome to my stop in the Around the World Blog Hop. My Roy G Biv partner, Julie B Booth first invited me to join the blog hop in October. Susan Bowers of Tracemarks extended an invitation soon afterwards as well. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to accept their kind invitations at the time.

When Lotta Helleberg asked me to join, what immediately ran through my mind was third time's the charm and I knew the universe was telling me that I needed to do this. A heart felt Thank You! to Julie, Susan and Lotta for thinking of me and extending the invitations. If you click on their names, you'll be spirited away to their own blog hop posts. From there, you can hop away to your heart's desire discovering new artists around the world - all from comfort of your own home. Enjoy!

1. What am I working on?

I have 3 tea bag pieces in various stages of creation and an idea for a series that needs attention.

A replacement for Water Dreams 1, which sold from Alchemy of Tea at the Cornelius Arts Center, is nearly complete. It's waiting for me to decide how to finish the sides...or if they are.

What began as the base for an artist book has aspirations of becoming an installation. Think ancient scroll cascading down the wall and landing on the floor. A bit more length is required, I do believe.

Of course, there's always my hand stitching on black cotton to occupy the time when one or the other of my little urchins is hip hopping or learning the piano.

A friend has inspired me to begin crocheting again. Luckily, we've a wonderful yarn shop nearby called Nancy O. That's where this luscious grey came from. It's meant to be a wrap to keep my shoulders warm on our chillier days. Charcoal grey and burgundy will be added at some point along the way.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Good question. The short answer is that I don't really know. In wanting to find my own voice with the tea bags, I haven't researched to see what others are doing. That probably sounds funny considering my participation in Alchemy of Tea, but it's true.

That said...I alternately view the tea bags as paper and cloth. The flow-thru type are what I use and those are generally made with abaca pulp. Being paper means that they are strong and any technique one would use with paper can be applied yet the thinness and translucent quality of the material hint at organza - and makes them perfect for layering and stitching.

3. Why do I write/create what I do?

Memories are often associated with tastes, scents and sounds. Tea is my memory link. One whiff of freshly brewed black pekoe with mint and orange transports me back to my grandmother’s kitchen. Lady Grey winds me to Newburgh, Scotland where I first sampled its delicate yet steady taste.

My work with tea bags explores and expands on the concept of memories, whether real or imagined, through the use of marks – the tea’s own as well as my hand made marks, direct rust prints, digital prints and hand and machine stitching.

4. How does my writing/creating process work?

During an artist talk this summer, I listened as two painters explained their individual theories and practices for organizing chaos via their art. They were attempting to make it nice and orderly, have it make sense and play well with others, etc. In listening to them, I realized that I have gone in the opposite direction with my work...in fact, I have embraced chaos via a wabi sabi sensibility.

Thank you for stopping by my corner of the world. Enjoy!

Home again for a bit

My pieces from the Alchemy of Tea exhibit at the Cornelius Arts Center arrived home safely over the weekend. I finally had time yesterday to open the tubes and hang the larger pieces in the studio. It's nice to have them home for a few months before they go adventuring in the spring.

The exhibits close at 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 30, 2014.  The festival has been very well received attracting thousands of visitors from across Canada and the USA as well as from Europe.

One viewer commented: "Just wanted to tell you how ‘blown away’ I was by the show – a phrase I am sure you have heard so many times, but it is just so impressive... As amazing as the show is, the way it is ‘hung’ is just as amazing and I can’t imagine how one plans a layout of this magnitude."

A letter to share

Even before the World of Threads Festival 2014 officially opened, the announcements for it had me dreaming of attending - in large part because two of my favorite artists, Christine Mauersberger and Judy Martin have work in it.

Since then, I have marveled at the quality of work in the exhibitions comprising the festival. A happy dance has been done each time a communication came from World of Threads that featured Christine's or Judy's work. The latest letter features both brilliantly and I couldn't resist sharing it.

---------------------

Hello Jennifer,
We wanted to give you an update about the World of Threads Festival 2014:

The Festival opening weekend was fantastic. We had nearly 1,000 people through one venue alone on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1. We were thrilled to have 48 of the 97 artists participating in the Festival, in attendance on the opening weekend. These artists came form across Canada, the USA, from the UK and from France. Other artists have been visiting since and more are expected before the Festival closes.

It's not too late for you to visit. The Festival is on for a further two weeks and closes at 5:00 pm on Nov. 30, 2014. Below are some photos. We'll be posting full albums after the festival on the website.

Searching for Roy G Biv 3 - Brown - Update 3

The search for Roy G Biv has lead us to celebrate brown this month. Once again, I've culled through my archives for photos to share. Enjoy!

Grace loved chocolate ice cream in her younger days...still does.

Want more browns? Check out Julie's, Sharmon's, Maya's and Mary Ann's offerings. And take a stroll over to Paper Ponderings to see the new book that Fiona is working on.

If you've browns to share, just leave a note for Julie or I and we'll link to your post as well. Enjoy!

-----------
More browns have been posted!

Jill of Recycled Daze has a bounty of nature's browns.
Barbara of Salt Air and Pistachios has gigantic treasures.

I am adding Velma's post at Wake Robin to the list because you simply must see the corn ladies in the fields that she drives by each day...and they are a shade of brown so they fit right in.

-----------

Lisa at arzigogolare has me craving chocolate this morning. And I can't find any!!! Must run to the store....

Charlton Stitcher collected browns in her travels.
Yarngoddess found a gorgeous brown cat.

Roy G Biv $64,000 Question -

Julie and I are considering continuing the search for Mr Biv in 2015. Round 4 would begin January 15 with red. This year we ventured outside the rainbow alphabet with pink, white, black, brown and December's blogger's choice in order to extend the fun for a full year.

However you participated in the search - by posting the month's color or by reading the posts and admiring the photography - I'd like to hear your thoughts on extending the rainbow in 2015. What non-Roy G Biv colors would you like to see featured? Turquoise comes to mind as do gold and silver.

Thanks for considering!
