The Sketchbook Project

Who knew printing circles and their negative space could be so much fun?

While my intent is to print a page or two each day, life sometimes has other ideas - like being in Minneapolis for a week and returning home with a nasty cold that had me in bed for a couple days. Not the ideal souvenir.

And then there are my daughters. I keep trying to sneak upstairs to print a page or two when they're busy playing and ignoring me. Whatever innate radar it is that alerts young children to the fact that mom or dad is talking on the phone seems to extend to mom attempting to catch a quick art fix. However, I have managed to print a few new pages.

There were a couple happy mistakes in this group. In the 5th from the top, I added too much water to the magenta acrylic and the paint ran under the screen when the circles were brushed in. I went over it with gray circles and love the effect.

The other goof is in next to the last photo. I'd printed gray on the pages, let it dry a bit and then printed the magenta circles in the last photo on the next page. In opening the gray spread, one area was stuck fast and tore a bit. I took advantage of the hole and went over the preceding spread with magenta.

Maybe I should make more mistakes. What do you think?

  1. heck yeah! Actually.... in looking at these... the next to last was my CLEAR favorite! WAY out in front of the rest! Very very cool, Jennifer! I think the art we create as parents has a very different style as the art we created before children. I haven't quite figured out why... other than maybe we don't "think it thru" because we have to listen for the cat screaming as the kids swing it by the tail or the splashing in the fishtank... etc... but I think the art we make now is MUCH more fun and exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your sketchbook!
