Christine Mauersberger - Timelines

Timelines, 2014
Christine Mauersberger
Work Gallery, Ann Arbor

In Christine's hands rubylith + tulle + stitching = pure magic.

Timelines is the visual concept of time. We follow time, yet we cannot see it. We think about time being in motion, or expanding, or fading depending on whether we are contemplating the future or the past.

Time is both a real and abstract concept. If we were asked to paint a picture of the blur of activity in our lives from birth to now, how could that idea be seen in the abstraction of our minds?

Technology allows us to store, record, and share our lives through photography.

With a finger-swipe or click on our mobile devices all of the meaningful moments in the previous year or years can be seen at once.

In Timelines, I've distilled the concept of time by using red lines to represent the movements we make in starts and stops. They flow and move and twist just as our own lives do and represent these moments.*

  2. Thank you for this lovely post about this important piece of art. I've seen this piece in Oakville - but I like how it is installed here - low enough and spread out enough for interaction with the viewer - walker - breather.

    1. Judy, I so wanted to see it in Oakville, along with your work and had, in fact, been planning to. As you know, life often throws curve balls and my plans changed. It was a treat to see Timelines in Ann Arbor and share it with my family. Ellie was most taken with it and took many photos. I need to see just what's on her camera...

I loved that Timelines was the room. The shadows on the walls and floor were such an intergral part of the work. Can't imagine viewing it otherwise now. I love your phrase "viewer - walker - breather". Very apt and poetic.

      Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy.

Isn't it fascinating and inspiring when an artist can do that and do it so well? Makes me tingle with excitement for the creativity of it all. Enjoy!

  5. I love how shadows fall when light and people interact with installation.

    1. Me too! The shadows rendered by art fascinate me and I always wonder if the artist gave as much thought into the shadows that would/could be produced and their effect when making the work. I'll ask Christine when we get together in October. Enjoy!

    1. It was a wonderful trip - short and sweet and filled with activity...gotta keep those little angels occupied or their alter egos come out to play. I hope your trip is amazing!

  7. Hi J - as others have said what an interactive piece - so many layers and dimensions - and good to see the urchins as part of the installation. Go well. B

  8. What wonderful serendipity. I love the shadows. They catch my eye more than the red - but the words are poetry too...so glad you could be there and that Urchin 1 and Urchin 2 had a fine time - boy are they growing up!

    1. Serendipity was definitely in play this time. Like you, I love the shadows. It was fun to watch their movement and rhythm as the urchins walked through the installation.

And yes - the urchins are growing quickly. Urchin 1 (Ellie) had a growth spurt this summer and the top of her head now reaches my mouth. They're enjoying measuring their advancement on my height and can't wait to tower over me...and be able to wear some of my shoes. Enjoy!

What a lovely idea. I've done just that with other installations and it slipped my mind this time. Guess another trip is needed!
