The Pulse Project

The Pulse Project is taking place at The Empty Spaces Project gallery in Putnam, Connecticut during the entire month of April 2015. Run by Paul Toussaint and Ann Monteiro, this is the space that recently hosted the 5 x 5 Small Works exhibition, also based on The Pulse.

29 artists that were featured in my books (The Pulse of Mixed Media and The Mixed Media Artist) are exhibiting their work at the show. The exhibited pieces reflect the full range of mixed media and include assemblage, encaustic, collage, acrylic, oil, pastel, photography, digital, fabric, jewelry and more. A number of the works were originally featured in the books although the majority are new. (from The Altered Page)

I am honored to be have been included in Seth's second book,  The Mixed Media Artist, and even more so to be part of The Pulse Project. The exhibition officially opened yesterday and the opening reception is tomorrow night, 6-9 pm at The Empty Spaces Project gallery, 114 Main Street, Putnam, CT. It's sure to be an exciting night. Stay tuned for photos!

Seth, being the kind soul that he is, has created a page on his blog of the works in the exhibition, making it possible for you to peruse the art without leaving home. Click here to be taken there.

Hope to meet you at the opening!

Make Your Mark

One of the best opportunities that came my way in 2014 was an invitation
from Jeannine Stein, editor of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine,

to write a recurring column for the 2015 issues.

In Make Your Mark, I will be sharing some of my mark making techniques and the tools used in the process.

The January/February issue of Cloth Paper Scissors is out now. I'm thrilled to be in the company of Seth Apter of The Altered Page. In The Creative Pulse, Seth will address issues that all artists deal with beginning with ways to identify your own signature style.

Stay tuned! 2015 promises to be a fascinating year.

The Mixed-Media Artist

About this time last year, an email from Seth Apter of The Altered Page arrived in my inbox. His second book was in the works and he wondered if I'd be interested in participating. Several happy dances later, I composed what hopefully was a semi-intelligent thank-you-for-inviting-me-and-why-yes-I'd-love-to-participate note back.

Another email arrived very soon after which brought with it numerous insightful questions to be mulled over. Several were fairly easy to answer, like my motto, while others required pondering.

The most difficult thing for me was to create a self-portrait.

Really? A self-portrait -

from the person who can't draw

or paint

or create anything that actually resembles

some recognizable thing? It was just too funny. But I did it.

Know what else I did? Not long after receiving Seth's invitation, I got to meet him...in person. Seth is delightfully charming and makes you feel as if you've known him forever. Really...what's not to like about a fellow rust junkie?

Many thanks to you Seth for including me in The Mixed-Media Artist! Congratulations to all the artists who grace the pages.

A look inside "The Mixed-Media Artist"

If you heard a huge squeal of surprise followed by a bit of nearly maniacal laughter just a few minutes ago, it was most likely me. So sorry for any ears that may be still be smarting from the decibel level reached, but an email from Seth Apter is to blame.

Many of you know Seth and/or are familiar with his blog The Altered Page or his book The Pulse of Mixed Media. His second book, The Mixed-Media Artist, will be out soon. The email that had me (squealing and laughing with total glee just like my 6 year old little urchins when they're very happy) doing a happy dance in the studio announced that a few pages of The Mixed-Media Artist is now available for viewing on Amazon. If you'd care to take a peak, just click here.

Once at Amazon, simply click on the Look Inside for a preview...and to see what had Pam (yes! she's visiting...more on that soon) quickly covering her ears and finally leaving the room in search of quiet.

Quick now....go look...and order a copy...or 2...or 3 even.

Thank you Seth for such incredible placement in The Mixed-Media Artist. Dinner on me next time I'm in NYC. Congratulations!

What a way to start the week

I'm an early riser. Always have been and it's a good bet that I always will be. Even now, or maybe that should be especially now, with the little urchins to get ready for school, I make a point of rising early enough to have at least 30 minutes to sit and enjoy a cup of tea while checking email and favored blogs before it's necessary to switch into mom mode. This morning was no different.

While enjoying a cup of jasmine tea, I logged on to check my email and found a note from Seth Apter of The Altered Page. He is in the process of writing the follow up to his first book, The Pulse of Mixed Media. A few things have happened that he wanted to share - the title has changed, the cover art is in, the publication date has moved up (now October 2013) and the book is available for pre-order from Amazon.

Exciting news all round, wouldn't you agree? I saved the cover art file to my computer for a better look (that little thumbnail included in the email was just a tad too small to really see). Talk about getting the surprise of a lifetime when I opened the file for a better glimpse! Holy smoke Batman!!! My art made the cover!!! What an honor this is!

Needless to say, I want to say a huge Thank You to Seth.  Made my week. Heck, my month and possibly even my year. What a way to start the week!
